Poltava info
Poltava, city, capital of Poltava Oblast, eastern Ukraine, on the Vorskla River. The city is the trade and transportation center of a fertile agricultural district. Its manufactures include processed food, motor vehicles, machinery, and leather goods. Several institutions of higher education, theaters, and a museum are here. Settled by the 9th century, Poltava was captured by Lithuania in 1430. In 1709 the advancing troops of Charles XII of Sweden were defeated near Poltava by Peter I, thus ensuring Russian victory in the Great Northern War. Population (1998 estimate) 317,000.
